Introduction

In this lesson, students will continue their study of architecture, making connections between their daily lives and the built environment. This probing exploration of buildings will help students develop visual awareness. This project may be easily applied to the past, present or future.

Procedure

Step 1: Reviewing Architecture

  1. Using the opaque projector and a building image, discuss review some basic architectural features with your class. You may periodically call on students to trace particular features from the projection on a piece of butcher paper at the front of the room.
  2. Have all students make individual drawings of the building during and after the discussion.

Step 2: Creating the Mural

  1. Discuss with your class murals and their construction
  2. Guide students in creating two individual buildings featuring the details discussed in Step 1
  3. Upon completion of the individual buildings, students can glue their buildings to create the class mural.
