In
this project students from Paula Cooper's Hogg Middle School
Enrichment class worked with students from Burrus Elementary
School to research
the history
of the first incorporated black municipality in Texas. Students
learned about the history of this important neighborhood, developed
questions about the area, and then conducted
interviews with residents of the neighborhood. They learned
a great deal about the neighborhood itself and the national events,
such as the
Depression
and
the Civil
Rights Movement that occurred during the existence of the community.
Equally important, this project also allowed
community members to share
their experiences
and to preserve their memories in both a booklet and a website.
