Suzanne Sanderson, Art Teacher
Hogg Middle School

Students researched and wrote short summaries of the buildings presented in Hogg Middle School's mural of the Houston Heights 1891-1925. After students were assigned a building from the Mural, they began with a review on writing summaries and then conducted Internet and book research to find information on historic buildings. Students began with the book Houston Heights 1891-1925. It provided some basic information about some of the buildings that the students were researching. Next, students were instructed to go to the Handbook of Texas and the National Register of Historic Places to see if their building was listed and what information was available. Students were also instructed to conduct their own Internet and text research to see what they could find. In one particular case, a student was unable to locate any information on the building she was assigned to research, but was aided by some helpful information from a nearby cafe. After students conducted their research, they completed their short summaries for the art class.
